Many Members and residents have told us, both through our surveys and in person, that a main area of concern is the deteriorating appearance of the Avenues: damage to pavements, roads, and kerbs, blocked drains, fallen leaves and branches not being removed, weed overgrowth on roads and pavements, obstructions caused by hedges and trees.
Many of the issues listed above rest with Devon County Council and despite raising this with local Councillors, the response to date has been limited. Whilst it is very nice when residents help keep the public areas near to their properties tidy, it is clearly the primary responsibility of the various Councils. TARA will be raising the level of awareness of these issues by conducting walks during which we identify, and report for action, issues that we find. These issues are also notified to the local Councillors and we will discuss the issues at our twice-yearly meetings with them.
We will be doing a series of monthly walks that will cover every road within the Avenues within a 6 month period and will then be repeated. The first walk took place on Monday 9th March and covered the West side of Portland Avenue round to Douglas Avenue, Rolle Road, Fairfield Road, and the South section of Salterton Road between Carlton Hill roundabout and Portland Avenue. All of the issues have been reported for action.
Whilst the first walk was conducted just by Committee members, residents are free to join us on future walks. They start at 3pm on the following dates: April 13th, May 18th, June 8th, July 6th, and August 10th. Exact details of each walk will be notified to you one week prior by email and also online.
